Check Engine Light On? What to Do Before You Pay a Shop
The code your scanner reads is a starting point, not the answer. Knowing the difference keeps you from paying for parts you don't need.

Steady or flashing?
A steady check engine light means the car's computer stored a fault. It still needs attention, but you usually have time to get it looked at. A flashing light typically signals a misfire bad enough to damage the catalytic converter. Reduce speed and load, and get the car checked as soon as you safely can.
Reading the code yourself
Every gasoline car sold in the U.S. since the 1996 model year has an OBD-II port, usually under the dashboard near the steering column. An inexpensive scan tool, or a free scan at many parts stores, will read stored trouble codes.
Codes starting with P relate to the powertrain. A second digit of 0 means a generic code shared across manufacturers, and 1 usually means a manufacturer-specific code. Write down every code and the freeze-frame data if your tool shows it.
Why a code isn't a diagnosis
A code tells you which system reported a problem, not which part failed. An oxygen sensor code can be caused by a vacuum leak, an exhaust leak or wiring, not just the sensor. Replacing the part named in the code description is the most common way people spend money without fixing anything.
Getting a fair diagnosis in California
Diagnosis is skilled work and it's reasonable to pay for it. In California, the shop has to give you a written estimate before it starts, including for diagnostic time, and it can't exceed that amount without your approval.
- Tell the shop which codes you already pulled.
- Ask what the diagnostic fee covers and whether it's credited toward the repair.
- Ask for the test results that point to the failed part, not just the code.
- Ask for your replaced parts back when you authorize the repair.
Smog check timing
A car with an illuminated check engine light will fail a California smog check. If your renewal is coming up, deal with the light first, then let the car complete its normal driving cycles before testing so its readiness monitors are set.
