How to Check a California Auto Repair Shop's License
Two free state lookups tell you whether a shop is registered, whether its license is valid, and whether BAR has taken action against it.

Why the registration matters
California requires every auto repair business to be registered with the Bureau of Automotive Repair. A shop that isn't registered isn't allowed to take your money for repairs, and you lose the easiest route to a state-mediated fix if something goes wrong.
Smog Check stations and inspectors hold their own separate BAR licenses, so a shop that does smog work should show those too.
Lookup #1: the BAR Auto Shop Locator
BAR's Auto Shop Locator lets you search by shop name, city or ZIP code. Results show the license number and status, and they flag shops with an "Accusation Filed" or that are "On Probation." Those flags don't automatically mean a shop is bad, but they're worth reading before you approve a big job.
Lookup #2: the DCA license search
The Department of Consumer Affairs license search covers BAR licenses too. It's the better tool when you already have a license number from an estimate or invoice. It shows the legal business name, the address on file, when the license was issued and when it expires.
- Match the business name and address on your estimate to the license record.
- Check that the license status is Valid, not expired or cancelled.
- Note any previous business names listed on the record.
Red flags before you approve work
None of these prove wrongdoing, but each one is a reason to slow down:
- No written estimate, or pressure to approve work before you see one.
- An estimate or invoice with no ARD registration number.
- A business name that doesn't match the license record.
- Reluctance to return your replaced parts after you asked for them at drop-off.
- A total that grew without a call asking for your approval.
Filing a complaint
BAR takes complaints online, through an anonymous form, by mailed PDF form or by phone at (800) 952-5210. Include copies of your estimate, invoice and any photos. BAR says it contacts complainants within 7 to 10 business days and will try to mediate. It can't award damages the way a court can, but mediated outcomes include refunds, bill adjustments and free repairs.
Common questions
- Where do I find a shop's BAR number?
- It belongs on the shop's estimates and invoices, usually labeled ARD. You can also search the shop by name or city in BAR's Auto Shop Locator.
- Can I file a BAR complaint anonymously?
- Yes. BAR offers an anonymous complaint form, though an anonymous complaint can't be mediated on your behalf because BAR can't contact you.
